Woking Weirdboyz - Escalation Tournament List Analysis

Hello Everyone!

Today I thought I’d have a look at some of the ‘Super Heavy’ armies on display at the Woking Weirdboyz tournament. For escalation tournaments the make-up of all the armies really varies to a silly degree as there is no Meta.

As the first escalation event that runs as a swiss system, this is the first time these lists have surfaced!

The lists

Here’s a brief summary of what is going to Woking!

Main Armies

Daemons         6
Necrons         5
Eldar                3
Space Marines 3
Dark Eldar       2
Tau                 2
Tyranids         2
Space Wolves 2
Chaos         1
Imperial Guard 1
Grey Knights 1
Blood Angels 1
Farsight         1

Allies

None               19
Space Marines 4
Chaos              2
Necrons           1
Eldar                1
Grey Knights    1
Black Legion    1
Sisters              1

There are also 6 inquisitorial detachments hanging around.

Here’s the super heavy breakdown!

C'Tan                          3
Revenant                     2
Aetaos'Rau'keres         1
An'ggrath the unbound 1
Brass Scorpion            1
Gauss Pylon                1
Warhound Titan          1

So a bit of a variety there what with forge world also being used.

Suffice to say that it’s the C’Tan and the Revenant here that is most popular which I guess isn’t that much of a shock. However flying monstrous daemons are also very popular with 19 of various alignments taking the field and 14 Nightscythes also taking the field supporting those C’tan.

There aren’t many things from the stronghold book, a few void shields and a single Aquila strong point with macro cannon.

Is this what were likely going to see at escalation events? C’tan and Revenants fighting off against flying monstrous creatures… The ones that really scare me are the flying gargantuan daemon princes!

So let’s have a look at some of the lists including the above as well as the one with an Aquila strongpoint.

Revenant Army

HQ
Farseer, Jetbike, Singing Spear, Mantle of the Laughing God

Troops
5 Dire Avengers, Wave Serpent, Twin-L Scatter Lasers, Holofields
5 Dire Avengers, Wave Serpent, Twin-L Scatter Lasers, Holofields
3 Wind Rider Jetbikes, 1 Shuriken Cannon
3 Wind Rider Jetbikes, 1 Shuriken Cannon
3 Wind Rider Jetbikes, 1 Shuriken Cannon

Fast Attack
5 Warp Spiders, Exarch, Fast Shot, Twin-L Death Spinners

Fortifications
Aegis Defence Line, Icarus Lascannon

Super Heavy
Revenant Titan

As you can see we have A revenant backed up by a farseer (for guide presumably) supported by Jetbikes and waves serpents for tough scoring. A lot of the damage in these lists will be coming for the revenant itself and the troops are there to score and cotest if there is anything left for them to contest with! Only the two serpents and the warp spiders will be adding additional damage.

C’Tan Army

Destroyer Lord: sempiternal weave; mindshackle scarabs.
5 Necron Warriors
• Night Scythe
5 Necron Warriors
• Night Scythe
6 Canoptek Wraiths

Annihilation Barge

Sorcerer: Psyker (Mastery Level 3).

15 Chaos Cultists

10 Chaos Cultists

Heldrake

Transcendent C'tan: Seismic Shockwave; Cosmic Fire; Wave of Withering

This is a typical C’tan list. A C’tan supported by flyers in this case Nightscythes and Heldrakes. In this case again the main extra damage will be coming with the heldrake Nightscythes and the wraiths. This is similar to the eldar one in many ways other than the flyer contingent. Perhaps due to the although arguable the revenant causes more damage, it’s harder to destroy the troops coming in from the necrons flyers. It also means the C’tan has a defence against its only weakness ‘Flyers’.

Monstrous Daemon Army

HQ + Warlord = Daemon prince Be’lakor
HQ = Lord of change + Exalted reward

TROOP = Plague bearers x 10
TROOP = Plague bearers x 10

FAST ATTACK = Steeds of slaanesh x 6

FORTIFICATIONS = Void shield generator  + Two additional void shields

LORD OF WAR = Daemon lord An'ggrath the unbound (Big daddy forge world bloodthirster)

This list is very similar to your standard flying circus daemon army. However instead of your 3 daemon princes, you have one enormous flying monster that is incredibly difficult to kill. Ignoring this monster is the main option against him as he is insanely difficult to kill. Did I mention it’s difficult to kill? The Plaguebearers will reserve and the opponent will put 3 very hard models in your face. A pain in the arse to shift.

Aquila Strong Point

Grey Knights

HQ Inquisitor Coteaz (Warlord)

HQ Ordo Mallus Inquisitor
Terminator Armour, 3x Servo Skulls

Troop Formosan Henchman Warband
9x Acolyte (Flak Armour, laspistol and chainsword)
3x Servitor with Multimelta
Troop GK Strike Squad (5)
Justicar has a Nemesis Daemon Hammer
Heavy Support Nemesis Dreadknight
Personal Teleporter, Heavy Incinerator

Allies Detachment
Necrons

HQ Destoryer Lord
Sempiternal Weave, Mindshakle Scarabs, Warscythe
Troop Nercon Warriors (5) with Night Scythe
Troop Nercon Warriors (5) with Night Scythe
Fast Attack Canoptek Wraiths (6)

Fortification Detachment

Fortification Aquila Strongpoint 565 pts
Main building: Macro Cannon, Void Shield, Searchlights

So essentially a 1300 pts army with a unit that can sit and fire the macro cannon. The Macron cannon is obviously the focus here. This is different to your standard D army in that it has a more sizable army surrounding it. This will lead to increased flexibility if the stronghold was to die early on.

Conclusion

So is this the face of new 40k? Or are these armies just the start of an escalation revolution and are better armies out there to use? I have no idea, but my dark eldar are gunna sure try to batter them silly.

I’ll be doing a report of the tournament next week… Till Then!
