Dark Mechanicus (My Brighton List Review)

So you will hear on the podcast how my games went but I thought I would review the list I took and which parts worked well and which parts didn’t. And also look at what I would keep going forward.

I will rate each unit out of 5

CHAOS SPACE MARINE ARMY, Daemon Allies 1650
HQ
Sorcerer (60) –  Force axe (0), Warlord (0) 60
Very good in one game but 1 out of 6 is not great. Very reliant on getting a good spell and has limited to no damage output. 2

Great Unclean One (190) 1x exalted gift (30) 1 x Greater gift (20) Level 2 (25) 265
Very expensive probably too much so. Lack of damage output, and despite it resilience died in almost every game. 2

Troops
10x Cultists (50) – 50
10x Cultists (50) – 50
Cheap and hard to kill behind the Aegis, did their job filling my troop slots and holding objectives. Surprisingly good as a counter charge unit with 3 attacks each on the charge. 4

(A)10x Pink Horrors of Tzeentch (90) 90
Great Troop choice, good shooting potential, and unkillable without ignore cover behind n Aegis. 4

Fast Attack
Heldrake(170) – Baleflamer (0) 170
Heldrake(170) – Baleflamer (0) 170
Heldrake(170) – Baleflamer (0) 170
Did all I hoped for and more, Will be continuing with 3 of these guys. 5

Heavy Support
3x Obliterators (210)- Mark of Nurgle(18) VOTLW (9) 237
2x Obliterators(140)- Mark of Nurgle(12), VOTLW (6) 158
2x Obliterators(140)- Mark of Nurgle(12), VOTLW (6) 158
Probably the best units in the army, as they help balance the Heldrakes. Great flexibility with weapon options, good damage output and can kill the AP2 that my Heldrakes cant. Also Mark of Nurgle makes them a bitch to kill. 5

Fortifications
Aegis Defence Line (50)- Comms relay(20) 70
Made the Heldrakes reliable and protected my troops, would be even better if placed in my half rather than just deployment as Brighton did. 5

So what will I keep?
3 Heldrakes
6+ Oblits
2 Cultists
Aegis with comms
1+ Horrors (units of 11 with iridescent horror (extra d6, and precise shots when shots are from the champ cant believe I missed these things.)

So now back to the drawing board on the rest of the army for 1850 and the DOG tournament...

As always thanks for reading, comments and ideas on how to finish the list for 1850 welcome.

Rich

  1. Look at the positives, only two duff units in your list, that's not bad! I have to agree on the guo, every time I use him, he dies, and I wish I had had a lord of change for the versatility.....

So what about the hq? You going to keep him as a 60pt tax for the army? (not bad imho) spend more points on him (had some success with a mon sorcerer in termie armour with the oblits in my lists, but its expensive) or swap for something else?

    1. I would agree it was great to have most units do their jobs the HQ's are the big thing for me to look at. Terminator armour for the Sorcerer is not a bad shout. May also make him level 2 to be more usefull, and still only just over 100pts.

  2. Although the GUO went down in most games, how much firepower did he absorb before he went down. Is it worth having his point in other models, or does he distact people from shooting at the oblits straight away ?

As hornywingythingy said, it's not bad when so much of a list performs so well, and Helldrakes and Oblits are the stars of the choas codex. My only suggestion would be one more troops choice, 3 seems a bit small.

    1. Rath you have a point, I am maybe being a little hard on the Fatman! Two of the games he died because I was stupid, listen to the podcast and you will find out why!

He does soak up a lot of firepower, and I like the T7 and with iron arm he can charge basically anything.

Troops: I will be running 2 units of 11 horrors with a champ and the 2 units of cultists going forward i think.

  3. How are you finding Crusade and The Relic? Perhaps some mobile troops to get to far objectives?

I'm guessing you'll be finding more fliers at 1850pts too. Could add in some more anti-air.

By the looks of it, the CSM are working well. Depending on what you need to balance the list (more troops and anti-flier?), do you want to keep Daemons as allies?

    1. You make some good points here, I think I need to use my deep striking units more agressivly to get to objectives in any mission as that was a bit of a weakness.

I find the heldrakes can do most of my anti-air and with Tau and Eldar not bringing much in terms of flyers I think I will wait this out before commiting to more.

The problem if I dont take Daemons is that I will probably take Tau or Necron allies and that is something I wish to avoid. I just don't think CSM can cut it as a solo army.

  4. Hi Rich, for a bit more anti-air try putting a hades on 1 of the drakes, coupled with a Lord of the change (utilising prescience) it is devastating for flyers.

    1. Im not finding the anti-air a problem atm, but thats a solid idea. Lord of change is very tempting but would have to work out how to convert one for my dark mechanicus.

    2. How about a conversion? Some kind of withered demon, with metallic/metal wings? Perhaps part cyberised? Maybe a kitbash using the high elf phoenix kit as a basis?

    3. not a bad idea will have a think on this.

    5. I have been thinking of the phoenix kit for ages, apparently its choc full of spare parts, two sets of wings and 4 different heads I think..... Its one of the kits blue table painting were on about as a great basis for conversion/bits.

  6. Hi, how did you place in the end? I took my Dark Adeptus model out of the box the other day and thought about what to do with them. Of course placing in torunaments would be nice and so I look into your direction for advice.

  7. ok so i placed 16th out of 40 so ok as i havent played much in the last 8 or 9 months. i always aim for top 10 so i will be pushing for that the rest of the year.

  8. Rich - you can't use the phoenix - I've used it to make my Fateweaver, and I don't want yours making mine look bad!

  9. also, just listening to the podcast, if you run furies I can recommend furies of Slaanesh.
The only reason to have furies is for a quick assault, slaanesh gives rending and fleet which makes them killy and more reliable to get into combat when you want them

    Dogs are better though!

    1. ok mike no phoenix. im tempted to make a giant mechanical screamer but it will be alot of scratchbuilding i thinks.

and i agree slaanesh furies are the best as with poor ld they need to win combat.
