Tournament Gamers Painting Masterclass 1: Matt Cook – Dark Eldar

Tournament Gamers Painting Masterclass 1: Matt Cook – Dark Eldar

This blog will be the first in a series of blogs dedicated to that rare thing. A tournament gamer with a fantastically painted army. It’s not rare to see a painter who casually games or a gamer that is great at painting but focuses on getting an army done. It is however extremely rare to see an army painted with such skill you’re guilty that they have to face your own dreary army across the battlefield and for this army to be used at several tournaments and survive the wear and tear that comes with it.

My first subject is Matt Cook. I first met Matt vaguely when I first started going to tournaments regularly. Since then I’m sad whenever I’m at a tournament and he’s not there. An amazing guy and if you play him you’ll definatly enjoy it. A silent member of team Death or Glory now, he produced this fantastic Dark Eldar army and I have invited him to tell us about it below. So without Further ado here is Mr Matt Cook.

Podcast Episode 4 - Army Transitions in 6th

Long time no hear people!

Alas I was on holiday for a month in the US of A and the rest of the guys are not as well versed in the Tech Cult.

Our latest offering concerns how we see certain armies making the transition from 5th edition to 6th edition.

We have sorted out dedicated hosting now for our podcast and should now be available on iTunes although I am Mac illiterate.

We now have an RSS feed for the podcast too, please subscribe away!

That Guy @ Octoberfest - Space Wolves & The Blob

So I entered Octoberfest having played only a handful of 6th Edition games and none of them under  tournament condition.

Like the guys have been saying this is the big one for us - but it was hard trying to write a list for a tournament that historically is always so different to any meta generated from standard win lose draw rulebook missions.

Let me explain...

Dark Eldar: Octoberfest!

Dark Eldar: Octoberfest!

So here it is! Our favourite tourney and it didn’t disappoint. We got heavily drunk on the Saturday night. And I had plenty of great games.

A bit of background about Octoberfest. This is probably the oldest tournament on the scene at the moment. It has a unique rule set and as such to do well you need a ‘Mayhem’ army. What I mean by this is that taking just one objective isn’t enough to win well. To get full generalship marks in a game you have to take EVERY objective. Tabling an opponent doesn’t get you full points you must take the objectives. Similarly in kill points winning by 1 doesn’t help. You have to win by a lot to get the full quota of points.

Below ill briefly go through my games what I learned and I’ll give a quick review of the tourney itself. And so on with the show!

Tyranid Tournament Report - Octoberfest

Octoberfest and Mayhem run by Tolworth First Founding are the tournaments which really started it all for most of us over here at death or Glory. And to a certain extent its responsible for Death or Glory as a whole.
So time for a history lesson! These tournaments are primarily team events. Which have their own missions and scoring system, meaning that you need to win big to get the max of 20 tournament points. For the past 11 years 2 teams emerged as the regular contenders to the crown, and both have had their ups and downs as well as numerous name changes*.

GT Heat Brighton - Necrons

So all of us Death and Glory guys had a weekend down in Brighton for the GT Heat, where much fun was had and many drinks were drunk!

Preparation for the Iron Fist

With the date for the Iron Fist Painting Challenge rapidly approaching, I thought it was time that I worked out some colour schemes and see how long the painting took*... So without further ado, I present my test cultist:

Dark Eldar: The GT Heat!

Dark Eldar: The GT Heat!

So as I said last week, I went to Brighton GT this week. Below I’m going to list out how I did and things I learned. Having only played 10 games previous there were several mistakes I made against everyone so thanks for everyone’s patience! I also learned more about each army I was facing and what the Meta was looking like now.

So without further ado here was what happened!

Dark Mechanicus in 6th (Painting update The Dark Mechanic Arrives)

So with the exception of completing all the basing the army for Brighton is complete. I waited until the end to do the model for the Dark Mechanic himself. I wanted to give myself a treat at the end of finishing painting zombie Necron warriors and other units. For the back story i wanted to use one of the Dark Mechanicum Characters that is on the warhammer 40k wiki, and then bring him to life. The character Phayzarus caught my imagination with his hatred of Space marines and the idea he has rebuild his body completely to be a regenerating construct of flesh and steel.  Below I have put his history. I found this and a lot of my other info on the Dark Mechanicus on this site

Hope you enjoy...

Dark Eldar: The Next Step

Dark Eldar: The Next Step

So after a relatively mixed tourney 2 weekends ago and having just watched my favourite grand prix driver get his first ever podium (GO KOBYASHI!!!) I’ll move onto talking about the changes to my list
for Brighton GT.

A little background to the tourney is that the Brighton warlords normally hold 3 tournaments a year
and, as its no restrictions, was a logical step to hold the 2nd of the 3 GT heats here. It’s held above a
pub which is great however irritatingly Brighton is pretty pricey for accommodation so no nights out!
There’s a car park opposite and it is very easily accessible. This is the first Major tournament of 6 th
for us and so with a little bit of trepidation it’s time we present my army list!

It’s important to note by the way that the meta up north seems to represent a major shift towards
infantry with guard allying with a battle brother. I have mixed feelings about this but I’ll get into that
later. But now…. Onto the show!

Dark Mechanicus in 6th (The List)

Ok so after several months of trying to decide on what to put in my list it finally happened I actually made a decision on the list and how I want it to play. I had already talked about certain units that I wanted in the list but I needed to construct the whole list. When I am list building I have a few restrictions over your normal tornie player, they are the rule of cool (exactly what it says on the tin I may want to use something for coolness factor). And model count (I like to make my army’s look nice and a bit different but this takes time so I try to limit my lists to as few models as I can).

Now I have explained my restrictions I will post my army list for the upcoming Brighton tornie.
