DoG Podcast Episode 27 - Escalation

This episode is primarily concerned with the recent release of the Escalation supplement.

Ru, Rich, Taylor and Buckers have a chat concerning some of the finer points of the supplement and the impact it may have on competitive play and the hobby as a whole.

The impact of escalation Part I: The Whine Wars

Recent events in the world of 40k
The last week or so has brought around the latest in a long history of Whine Wars on the internets and in social circles (yes these actually exist!) concerning mainly something which is known as “D weapons”. Love them or loathe them, D weapons now exist in the standard Warhammer 40,000 game thanks to the release of the Escalation supplement. Over the coming months we can expect there to be a general consensus opinion made for tournaments internationally, nationally and regionally. At present there is a lot of whining etc going on concerning how over-powered D weapons are and how they break the game of 40k as we know it.

Before I delve into the whine wars specifically I want to provide my own personal definition of what tournament 40k should be, please note I do not think that this has ever existed nor will it ever exist, although a large part of the internets seems to think otherwise:

New Project (Eldar Wraithknight)

I have been very busy with life and work stuff lately so sorry for the lack of posts. I am now back and with a new project. I have been keen on doing an Eldar army since the new book came out, so that's what I have decided for my new army.

Standard Burner: Bunker Assault and Escalation

I wanted to have a column which could be off topic as it were from whatever I would be currently writing about. So behold, Standard Burner.

Dark Eldar: Inquisition

So I’m gunna again avoid talking about Daemons, Some terrible delayage I know! I am though about to talk about distrustfull allies. But with the new Inquisitoral codex in tow I thought I’d quickly talk about these guys!

The inquisition… The amount I have been the opposite end of coteaz seize just isn’t funny…. Especially as those seizes and normally from another DoG member… They know I hate him!

Seizes are definatly pretty bad especially for Deldar, Question is… is there anything in the book for us?

Dark Eldar: Army building mistakes

Hi everyone I was meant to be doing an article on more desperate allies but due to myself being concussed (Long story…) todays will be a small blog about the common errors I always see in a Dark Eldar Lists

Now I’m not going to sit here and say that everything I do is correct or else.... I’m open to new theories, new ways of using my Dark Eldar. There are plenty more ways but there are some fundamental things I have learned in my 20 or so tournaments with these guys now (Not sick of them just yet!)

Ben Salmon guest article (alternative Taudar list)

Hey all

I’m Ben Salmon, I played against 60% of the DoG team at Mayhem and I spoke to Rich about doing a guest article about my army that was talked about during Podcast 25.

I guess I should list the army below:

Food For Thought: How Far is Too Far?

How far are you willing to go to win a game? This is the excellent question that Spicerack has asked over on 40k War Zone today.

This is an easy one for me. Cheating is too far. Everything else with in the rules is fair game on one condition - that both players are truly playing to win based on the rules.

Journey to a Throne of Skulls

So, after many a year of vowing never to go to the throne of skulls again after they changed the format, I purchased a ticket to the event in January 2014. But why, I here you ask? For someone who enjoys a more competitive tournament is this not completely against the grain?

Centurion Fest

Hi. I’m Ian and will be contributing a few articles to Death or glory in the upcoming months mainly about my new army I have been using and some other articles about gaming. I having been playing 40K on and off since Rogue Trader and got into playing regularly at the end of 3rd edition down at Tolworth and Woking 1st founding clubs. It’s been a while since I wrote anything about the hobby so this is just a quick recap of the past few years for me. I spent the last two years of fifth edition playing space wolves with the odd bit of chaos marines here and there. Chaos has always been primarily my most used and favourite army but I have dabbled with a fair number over the years such as Orks, codex marines and even Eldar for a bit in 4th edition.

Steve's Octoberfest - Game 1

The weekend saw the DoG guys favorite tournament of the year - Mayhem (Octoberfest) which was 1750 points, 5 game, and no Forgeworld.

The missions are very custom and so is the scoring - I will go into that in more detail during the reports. What I want to do here is outline what army i took and talk about my first 2 games.

I've been going to Mayhem tournaments twice year now for around 10 years so I am pretty familiar with the custom scenario setup and it's importance around troops. On the other hand I had 0 hour playtime with the list I submitted and was using Adepta Sororitas allies which are a completely new codex. My expectations going in to this were practically zero.

Dark Eldar: Octoberfest 2013 – Distrustful allies!

Ok so having come off a disappointing result in the GT Heat, I went into Octoberfest wanting to do something different. I’d already mentioned on the blog that I wanted to go distrustful allies way. And this is the route I took…

Please note in Mayhem it is a degree of Victory tournament and the main focus on it is troops and the ability to take objectives. Therefore in the below list I’ve taken less venoms/Trueborn in order to get more troops into it.

Death or Glory Tournament, Painting Competition, Ashtead 7/8th March 2014

Hello everyone and welcome to the first ever Death or Glory Painting Competition!

We know for some people 40k isn't about tournament gaming, as such we are celebrating this with our own 40k Painting competition at the same time as our 82 man tournament.

No-one Suspects the....

Wow - We are really being treated by the GW Digital Edition guys.

They set a goal of reaching 5000 likes on their Facebook page and low and behold as promised, a sneak peak of the next digital codex and boy, this ones going to be a popular one!

Octoberfest 2013

Just a quick one from me today - Wanted to highlight a few things about this weekends 1750pts Octoberfest tournament and how I feel our team will fair down in Tolworth.

You can check out The Tolworth First Founding's facebook page here if you were interested in attending future events.

So we have Myself, Luke Nurser, Michael Marlow, Richard Fielder and James 'The Disaster' Taylor within the Death or Glory team. Outside of that we have everyone's favorite thug of Sutton Chris Ashman who is still plying his trade being newly returned to the game.

Dark Eldar: Brighton GT Heat 2

Fresh from my good showing at woking weirdboyz, I approached the GT in good spirits and my dark elder working pretty well. So how did I do?

All levels of megh… but I’ll get onto that in a bit.

The GT took over from the GW run event a while ago and has been going on ever since. It copies GW in that it’s a heat to final form and we went to Heat 2 held in Brighton.

Codex: Adepta Sororitas

"She was an angel, pure as righteous destruction. She laid low the twisted and lifted the Righteous. At her passing  a million voices cried out her name. Shall we ever again see her like?"
-Sister Patricia of the Order Famulous on the disappearance of Saint Celestine

So. What's new other than the name?

As sad a fact as it is, I set my alarm for 6am this morning, eagerly anticipating the new download.

There are mixed opinions as to the nature of this new update for the Sisters of Battle.I'm not going to be looking at whether or not I believe the new update is worth £19.99 price tag - I bought it because the new Sisters will be used at a tournament I'm attending next weekend.

In this section I will simply be listing the new army wide special rules and warlord traits. Our next podcast will be a discussion around the good, the bad and the ugly of the new Codex.

40kGT Heat 2

Last weekend I attended my second tournament of the year, Heat 2 of the 40kGT in Brighton. Having managed to place in the top ten in July at another tournament at Brighton I was hoping that my refined list would help me into the top half to qualify for the national finals in March. I'll leave it to the other DoG guys to fill you in on how they did, but let's just say one of us did very well!

Dark Eldar: Woking Weirdboyz

Hello everyone welcome to this times editions sorry it’s a little late!

Woking weird boyz is held in a pub in central Woking. 28 people took arms and we fought tooth and nail above the pub for some snazzy trophies. Run by James French, he had lowered the points limit to 1650 pts to match the GT so people could use this as practice.

Sisters of Battle (& Blood Angels) Digital Release

So by now most of you will know that Sisters of Battle (and Blood Angels) are due a digital codex release this month.

It's almost spooky how recently, I have been testing an Eldar army I'd like to try out at tournaments and BLAMO GW go ahead and release this news. It's like I can't stay away from these guys.

It wasn't freaky enough just having Sisters on their own, but Blood Angels too, which I ally Mephiston in with.

Crazy List Project...

So I notice that Luke has already posted about this but without much explanation in his article "chapter master army of doom".

One of the things we as a team like to promote above all other things in 40k is to have fun. Now sometimes to achieve that fun we just like to smash people in games. However we also enjoy the game in different ways, one of those is by constructing silly lists that would be fun and cinematic to play with and against.

So the idea of this is to make something a bit different army wise not Tau or Eldar the so called meta, and see how it sits up to the challenge of tournament play. If any of these lists are successful you may even see them at Death or Glory 2 in March (shameless plug) for our second tournament, I know.

"Wonderful World of Fluff" Know your Foe, Pt1

Good Morrow and welcome to another instalment of WWoF!
I do apologise for the absence (once again) as my internet went down just over a week back and now I find myself talking to you from the mysterious and fairly 90s like world of an internet Cafe.
Today we will be talking about the greatest assest to your fluff outside of your own army. An assest in the form of your worst enemy...
So let us dive into the first part of the 'Know your foe' section, all about choosing your enemy.
Enjoy.

Chapter Master Army of Doom!

Right as per usual the glittery lights of a new codex have side tracked me, but unlike Eldar I refuse to do a Meta spam army. Us guys at Death or Glory are hopefully over the next couple of months going to each make a slightly ridiculous but competitive army to use at Tournaments, and this is my first attempt at a list. Those into your fluff, please look away now!!!!

Dark Eldar: Desperate Allies: Choices!

So as the veritable storm of new Codex’s appear to have ground to a halt for now and the next one rumoured to be tyranids, it seems like a good time as any to revisit Allies. Allies, initially controversial, now are an excepted part of the game. It allows a better variety of armies and isn’t the overpowered game breaking mechanic many people thought it was.

Dark Eldar can ally with A LOT of armies. Unfortunately these are mainly desperate allies except of course Eldar. However considering how popular this duo is, I’ll leave the rest of the internet to tell you can get fortune on a beast pack and the baron and that gives him a 2+ reroll able invulnerable save. The more interesting choices are the desperate allies. Are these useable? If so which ones? Well let’s have a look shall we?

Death or Glory Episode 21: The Death or Glory Tournament

Hey guys and weclome to Episode 21, the review of our recent inaugaural Death or Glory Tournament.

Myself and Mike guide Steve, Rich, Luke and Chris through the 5 games and have a general natter and a laugh as per usual.

Allow myself to introduce... myself.

Good evening Death or Glory blog readers! My name’s Chris, and I’ve found myself as the latest addition to this band of merry gents. In this post I’ll be talking about my first few steps in returning to 40k.

Almost four years ago I ended my eight year addiction to the hobby and took a break to move away to university. I’d known the Death or Glory guys for a short time before leaving the hobby, so having found their blog it was my first port of call when I decided it was time to come crawling back. I signed up for the tournament, and thus began my grand plans to return triumphantly to the game. As those of you who attended the tournament will know, I fell somewhat short of the mark, but had a fantastic weekend nonetheless.

Death or Glory Tournament - Organisers review

I think you’ll forgive me here! No Dark Eldar for my lovely readers this time that will be again in a couple of weeks. Today’s blog is about the Death or Glory Tournament. I’m sure Rich, Steve and Luke will talk about their games so I’ll talk about the experiences in running it.

DoG Tournament Day 1 Update!

So the DoG tournament is finally here and round 1 has been and gone, highlights of the round include Dave Symcox (Daemons + IG) vs Pete Corp (Chaos) on the feature table, a resounding victory for Dave.

Ray Duggins' Screamer Council failed the grimoire on turn 1 and 2 (with Fateweaver re-roll) and Rob Madeley (Necrons) took no prisoners.

The battle of the fitties, Andy Humpries vs BJ Mason ended in a narrow victory to Andy, Tau vs Tau was always likely to be close.

DoG Tournament Army Lists released! (yes, all 42 of them, heavily edited!) PLUS 1st round match ups!

Howdy once again ladies and gents, finally after much rage myself with the aid of Mike have trawled through all 42 army lists and rewritten them in a more easy to read format (some people really tested my patience with), so without further ado I present to you the 42 army lists being used this coming weekend at the inaugural Death or Glory Tournament!

DoG Tournament 42 lists PDF

This weekend there is an award for the most unusual BUT competitive list, the DoG team have voted and whilst we know the winner, who do you think qualifies for such a reward?

In other breaking news, there was an "issue" at a recent tournament concerning the wearing of vests, as such we would like as many people as possible to bring a vest for a silly picture at some point during the weekend, hopefully one of us can live up to the example set above!

GG and see you all at the weekend, Ru x

"Wonderful world of fluff" Back to the Future

Good Morrow all,
I do hope you are all enjoying a fantastic day.
First off, I do apologise for my absence, I have no excuse other than that I encountered a family emergency here and due to the size of my family it took quite a while for us all to deal with the news.
But I am back and back I am for good,
Today we talk about credibility; making your listener or reader believe your story and how to believe it yourself.
So let us get back to the future.

Eldar - The Next Chapter

So after a depressing couple of years using an incredibly dull army (Necrons) I have finally got new toys to play with! Eldar have always been one of my favourite armies, and in fact were my second army I ever collected back when the Craftworld Elder book first came out.

Over the next few months myself and the DoG team have 3 or 4 tournaments and I am going to do my best to have a regular blog updating everyone on all the trophies I am winning. Below is the list I will be using for the DoG tournament next week and the next few tournaments.

Sisters of Battle @ The Woking 1st Founding

"Your forces? There is not nearly enough! Understand, Governor, whatever foul work the Arch-Enemy has planned here must be stopped. But don't be fooled, this world will die. It just remains to be seen how many of us die with it."
- Canoness Superior Siena, before her rise to Sainthood (shown left).

This Saturday saw the brilliant Woking 1st Founding (sister club and namesake of the Tolworth 1st Founding) host a 1 day, 1850 pts, 3 game tournament for around 30 players. No Forgeworld allowed.

Myself and Mr Marlow both attended as it seemed like great practice for the Death or Glory™ tournament which is only 2 weeks away now! Christ that has gone quickly!

MY TYRANIDS AND ME... Creating the list you like and being competitive too.

When we were at Brighton a month or so back, we bumped into Zak Gregory, a Tyranid player with a difference. Tervigons? Flying Hive Tyrant? neither graced his list. What was also starterling is that they were well painted too! heaven forbid!

Zak has written this article for us about his nids. Enjoy!

CONCEPTS: Spam

Hmmm... Spam...
A quick note before we launch into the main post - The 'CONCEPTS:' series is intended to be a range of articles analysing and discussing certain commonly used (and sometimes misunderstood) terms and army building techniques, such as Balance, Redundancy and Duality. I have built up my understanding of these concepts from a large variety of different sources and I certainly do not claim to be the originator of these various ideas! I find writing the articles helps me clarify my own thinking, and so they are directed at myself as much as anyone else. Anyway, onto the main event!

Dark Eldar: Woking War Tournament

So obviously with our tournament around the corner, I’m busy organising and meeting and greeting, sorting out the final details with my brother with Ru and the rest of the Death or Glory team. So I popped into Tolworth first founding to sort out the boards and Ian Courtney came up to me and asked whether I’d like to play at Woking war…. It was a 1 day event and my girlfriend was away all during the week, so I thought what the hell! And packed my Dark Eldar and off I went!

Woking War is held at the Maybury centre in Woking and is an offshoot from the Tolworth first founding. A lot of people use this tournament as attest for the mayhem tournament and the DoG tournament. A lot of tournament regulars were testing out their DoG army lists and so I was up against a few tough opponents.

The system was at a net victory points plus fifteen to a maximum of 30 points, so a margin of victory tournament… I had no idea what to expect!

Dark Mechanicus (Lord of Change and DOG List)

So after a few more games with the Great Unclean One I have finally given up on him.

He is too slow and doesn’t allow me to reach out against the heavy fire power lists, so in comes the Lord of Change.
The Lord of Change has speed, resilience, damage output and through psychic powers helps out the rest of my army. The biggest problem I was finding was how to make him in my Dark Mechanicus style. But fresh from the painting table here he is with a few work in progress shots as well. Hope you like.
